Minster: Russia becomes world’s top sugar beet producer in 2016
MOSCOW, Feb 1 (PRIME) -- Russia harvested a record 50 million tonnes of sugar beet in 2016 to became the world’s largest producer of sugar beet, Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachyov said Wednesday during an all-Russian agronomical meeting.
“We received record harvests on many positions in 2016…I would like to draw your attention to a record harvest of sugar beet of more than 50 million tonnes. Russia became the world leader here, and beat countries like France, the U.S., and Germany. The harvest will allow us to produce about 6 million tonnes of sugar,” he said.
The bumper crop will also help Russia to export more than 200,000 tonnes of sugar, and it already exported more than 100,000 tonnes in July–December 2016, he said.
